San Mateo/Foster City Elementary School District $298 Parcel Tax: Rebuttal to the Argument in Favor of Measure V

With this latest “temporary” parcel tax, the San Mateo/Foster City Elementary School District claims they need a tax increase to continue providing quality education.

The district failed to get voter approval in 2017 for a $209.92 parcel tax, and now they want an increase to $298 per year for most homeowners.

Have they earned this extension that will cost you over $2,682 over the next 9 years (on top of the taxes you are already paying)?

Let’s look at the student performances in two key subjects:

  • 2016-17 students not meeting English literacy standards: 40.1%
  • 2016-17 students not meeting Math literacy standards: 45.1%

The District rewarded parents and taxpayers for the passage of the 2010 parcel tax by increasing the number of students who failed to meet English & Math standards!

Should you, the voters, reward the district for dropping scores in 2 key subjects?

If no, we encourage you to vote NO on Measure V.

The School District is spending $11,358 per student per year (ADA) with a student/teacher ratio of 21 to 1.

That’s $238,518 per classroom per year.  More than enough money to make district teachers the best paid teachers in California.

If the School Board thinks teachers are “the most valuable asset”, why does a majority of the funds go elsewhere?

Tell the School Board to be fiscally responsible: Vote NO on_Measure_V.

If you reward failure, you will get more failure!

Just say NO to Measure V.
